Graduate School of Convergence Security (AI) to be Established with 5.5 Billion won in Government Support Over Five and a Half Years

 

Fostering Master's and Doctoral-Level Experts in Four Core Areas of AI Convergence Security and Establishing a Research Hub

Korea University Sejong Campus has been selected as the implementing institution for the AI Graduate School of Convergence Security under the 2026 Convergence Security Core Talent Human Resource Development Program promoted by the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Institute of Information & Communications Technology Planning & Evaluation (IITP).

 

The program is a national initiative designed to establish and operate graduate schools specializing in convergence security while cultivating top-tier master's and doctoral-level R&D professionals capable of addressing the growing convergence security threats emerging across industries. Through this selection, Korea University Sejong Campus has secured a total project budget of 6.05 billion won, including 5.5 billion won in government R&D funding, through 2031.

 

To respond to the rapidly evolving AI landscape, the university has presented the vision of becoming an 'AI Security Frontier Graduate School that Continuously Evolves.' Leveraging its capabilities in developing safe and trustworthy AI systems, it aims to nurture first-mover AX security professionals who proactively respond to emerging AI technologies and lead industrial innovation.

 

The project will be centered on the Graduate Department of Artificial Intelligence Cyber Security. It will establish an integrated educational pathway linking Korea's first undergraduate Department of Artificial Intelligence Cyber Security with the Intelligent Cyber Threat Response Track under the Information Security Specialized University Program, enabling outstanding students to advance seamlessly from undergraduate to graduate studies.

 

The university will operate accelerated degree programs allowing students to complete bachelor's and master's degrees in as little as five years, and bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees in as little as six years. Expanded scholarship support will help identify talented students early while providing a stable environment for continuous academic and research activities.

 

Based on a comprehensive talent human resource development system integrating education, research, practical training, and career development, the university will systematically cultivate professionals equipped with A-SHIELD competencies: Adaptive, Specialized, Hands-on, Integrated, Exploratory, Leadership, and Developing.

 

Research and development activities will focus on four core areas of AI convergence security, progressing through the stages of core security technology research, industry-academia collaborative projects addressing industrial needs, and technology integration and validation. The four research areas include AI for Security, Security for AI, AI Platform Security, and Trustworthy AI & Privacy.

The university will also expand project-based education and internships reflecting industry demand while strengthening students' research capabilities and global competitiveness through collaboration with leading domestic and international research institutions. Through these efforts, it aims to continuously produce master's and doctoral-level AI security professionals equipped with the expertise required in the AI era.

 

Professor Kim Heeseok, head of the project and professor in the Department of Artificial Intelligence Cyber Security, said, "As AI technologies rapidly spread across industries, ensuring the safety and trustworthiness of AI systems has become a key component of national competitiveness. Through this project, we will establish Korea University Sejong Campus as a leading hub for AI convergence security education and research in Korea while nurturing world-class AI security professionals needed by both industry and the nation."

 

Through this initiative, Korea University Sejong Campus also plans to establish an AI security innovation hub for the Sejong and Chungcheong regions and develop an AX security talent cultivation model incorporating joint industry-academia supervision, collaborative projects, internships, and employment linkage. The university further aims to contribute to the expansion of a regional AI convergence security ecosystem based on mutual growth.
